Plain particle board (also known as chipboard) is an engineered wood panel manufactured by compressing wood particles with synthetic resin under heat and pressure. As the most economical panel product, it provides functional performance for non-structural applications where cost efficiency outweighs premium material requirements. The uniform composition allows consistent machining characteristics throughout the panel.
Core Composition
85-90% wood particles (softwood residuals, mill waste)
10-15% urea-formaldehyde (UF) or melamine-urea (MUF) resin
Physical Properties
Density: 550-750 kg/m³ (EN 323)
Modulus of Elasticity: 1,600-2,500 N/mm²
Screw Withdrawal Resistance: 800-1,100 N (EN 320)
Standard Dimensions
| Parameter | Range | Tolerance |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 8mm-40mm | ±0.3mm |
| Formats | 1220×2440mm | ±2mm lengthwise |
| Edge Type | Square, T&G, V-groove | Customizable |
Raw Material Preparation
Wood debarking and chipping (particle size 0.2-2mm)
Drying to 2-4% moisture content
Blending & Forming
Resin application (8-12% by weight)
Three-layer construction (finer surface particles)
Pressing & Finishing
Hot pressing (180-220°C, 20-30kg/cm²)
Sanding to ±0.2mm thickness tolerance
Advantages
Lowest cost per m² among wood panels
Excellent surface for laminates/veneers
Consistent internal structure for CNC machining
Limitations
Not suitable for load-bearing applications
Requires edge sealing in humid environments
Lower impact resistance vs. MDF
